Golden Key RMIT Chapter Newsletter 2008
Issue 2, July 2008

Activities and More Activities

Throughout Semester 1 2008, Golden Key RMIT has provided a range of activities for its members and the community. To name a few: The Business and Career Workshop, Self-Defence Workshop and the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. What makes our activities different is the fact that they are great additions to your portfolio. Many companies nowadays look for extracurricular activities in addition to great academic performance. Recognising this need in the industry, we try to provide our members with certificates of appreciation for our larger activities, which act as written proof for prospective employers.

Search Engine Optimization

Commonly known as SEO nowadays, these technique is currently one of the hottest requirement in the web development world. While it seems to be technical and complex the idea is to make it easy for the search engines (eg. google) to find your website. Think of those search engines as rats in maze, it would try every possible links to get to the correct page.

The more hints you give to the search engine, the better rank your website will be. Use title tag, meta tags, headers and search enging friendly URLs. More on friendly URLs next time. -Arvy

REFLECTION

Red Shield Appeal

salvoOn the 24th May 2008, Golden Key RMIT worked together with The Salvation Army for their annual Red Shield Appeal. The appeal is the biggest fund-raising event for this charity which is used to help 1,500,000 people in Australia. As a part of our community service initiatives, Golden Key recruited 20 volunteers, which were separated into two sessions, morning and afternoon.

At the corner of Nicholson and Princes Streets-Carlton, our volunteering team, under the guidance of the Salvation Army personnel, started to ask for donations from the cars stopped at the traffic lights. 50We were overwhelmed by the genorosity we encountered. Astonishingly 3 people in our team received AU$50 note donations. From the first session, which was only two and half hours, we were able to raise approximately AU$3000. We were surprised and thrilled because we were able to contribute something for those who are in need.

After the quite tiring two and a half hours, we asked for a few comments from our volunteers. One of them said that, although it was a hard work, it is a really good experience. In addition to that, they were able to make new friends from this volunteering. Some of the others also said that they achieved their own personal satisfaction. Overall, this event was a success and surely Golden Key is going to get involved again in teh following years. So if you missed out on the Red Shield Appeal in 2008, don’t worry because, without doubt, we are going to need your help next year.

Therefore keep in touch with the any upcoming Golden Key events.

The Inter-Chapter Indoor Soccer Tournament

On Sunday, 6th July 2008, Monash Golden Key Chapter held an indoor soccer tournament as a realisation of Vic Alliance network activity. Just for information, Vic Alliance is a group of all Golden Key chapters across Victoria. It includes RMIT, Monash, Swinburne, Deakin, Ballarat, as well as La Trobe. At the day of the tournament, each chapter sent a team of at least five people, with the mix of male and female players allowed. Participating for RMIT chapter were most of the committee members with the addition of some friends. There would be five teams in one group, all to be playing each other.

soccerIt was a good start by us, beating Deakin 3-2 on the first game. However, the next few games were not very easy since we had to play consecutive games for just a few precious minutes to rest up and gain some more energy. In the end, when most of our players could hardly move, we finished at fourth on the table with 1 win, 1 draw, and 2 losses. It was not bad at all, considering some of us have never even kicked a ball before. At the end of the day, we all knew that it was a great experience to be able to meet a lot of new people from other universities as well as strengthen the bond between us, GK RMIT. There will be a lot more activities like this in the coming future.

Just visit our website for more of the upcoming events. (http://www.goldenkey-rmit.org/)
